NINA SIMONE – A Musical Life

Let Us Put A Spell On You

2023 Adelaide Fringe Review – Weekend Notes (by Jon Cocks)

‘This is a show not only for fans of Nina Simone’s music but for any soul that is moved by the intensity and passion that drives soul music, the fun, the funkiness that is jazz and the raunchy, steamy rage at the world that are the blues.’

A tribute to an exceptional woman.

“The Goddess of the Piano” and “high priestess of soul”.

She was not afraid to use her music to challenge and change hearts and minds. Born in 1933 in Tryon, North Carolina, her mother taught her how to play piano when she was 4 years old.

Nina moved to New York City in the early ‘50s, Nina started singing in jazz clubs, developing a unique style and leaving an indelible mark on the world.

SA’s own JAZZ in CHEEK Quartet bring you a brilliant selection of songs and stories from this remarkable woman Nina Simone including her most famous requested song ‘My Baby just Cares for Me’. An individual, angry, loving, powerful, political prodigy, often Misunderstood.

She would mesmerize audiences in her unique delivery of popular songs like ‘I Put a Spell on You’ & ‘Lilac Wine’. She would bring her people together with gospel and folk tunes like ‘Sinnerman’ and ‘I Wish I Knew How It Would Feel To Be Free’. And put her own feelings and observations in her own compositions like ‘Four Women’ and ‘Do I Move You.’

All of which appear and more in this inspiring show will leave you ‘Feelin’ Good’!
